Here's a story, one that I will never forget.
The day after Lt Poe was killed, I came in and took over 2nd Plt. Needless to say, tensions were very high, guys were really quiet. It was spooky humping the next few days. Guys were just not with it. Nobody was talking to me and actually resented me it seemed. We humped for 3 days under these circumstances, and a bunch of monkeys about scared us to death at one point. The 3rd night with the Plt, I had twisted my knee that day when the toe of my boot got stuck under a tree root. Well, Doc Buskey came over after we had fobbed up and gave me a bottle of wintergreen to put on my knee. I think he was the 1st to even talk to me unless I had spoke to them 1st.
So there I sat in my hammock, not yet really comfortable with 'how"to sleep in them yet, and started to put the wintergreen on my knee. The damn hammock shifted and I dumped that whole bottle upside down onto my crotch! So I was rolling around in the dark in exreme agony! It broke the ice so to speak, and we as a unit took off from there on. Been alot of beer drinking and laughing over that incident thru the years! Doc was a good guy and we went on to be good friends the rest of my tour. He never could beat me with a 45 though!
I was so glad to catch up with him in 99, but lost track again, now I see he passed away in 2001.
